Information Retrieval

Information retrieval technologies are a means to cope with the so-called `explosion of information'. Too much has been said, written and stored in the last centuries to be ever read by an individual human being in his or her lifetime.
Therefore, it is valuable to have powerful techniques to search for specific information using computers, such as those provided by linguistic research and natural language engineering.

Important areas include automatic document-classification, information extraction, natural language query front-ends for databases, deductive databases, automatic abstracting, and autonomous information agents.
